SAHIWAL, Jan 31: Residents of Municipal Employees Cooperative Housing Society in a written complaint to the Regional Accountability Bureau alleged that society office bearers had embezzled Rs6.2 million development funds.

The RAB has summoned the record and started an inquiry into the misappropriation of society funds. Complainants alleged that the cooperative society was established in 1987 and the Punjab Board of Revenue approved society in 1992 by granting it 148 kanal and 19 marla land.

They said that society converted the land into 248 and 272 plots each of 3.5 and 5 marlas, respectively. The cost per marla was recovered from the allottees at the rate of Rs1,263 and the total amount liquidated to the BoR for Rs4.6 million.

Later, society president Mirza Muhammad Aslam, office-bearer Ghulam Farid Khokhar and others collected Rs9,500 and Rs16,000 as development charges per marla from the 3.5 marla and 5 marla allottees, respectively, which amounted to Rs6.7 million.

However, they alleged that no development of whatsoever nature was carried out in the locality. Instead, they said the office bearers sold out the plots earmarked for a mosque, a school and a park.

Presently, the complainants alleged that society in its three bank accounts had a balance of only Rs469,000 while the remaining amount of Rs6.2 million was misappropriated by the accused.
