PESHAWAR: University plans to build houses for teachers

PESHAWAR, Jan 25: Work on the construction of 100 houses for faculty members of Peshawar University will start soon, while a scheme to build two academic blocks which will accommodate 28 departments would also be taken up by the authorities shortly.

"These buildings will help overcome infrastructure and accommodation problems being faced by the teachers and students," said Vice Chancellor Mumtaz Gul here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a six-day workshop on 'Improvement of Teaching & Research in Life Sciences' which opened at Department of Zoology, the vice chancellor said that construction of various hostels was in progress and the university was planning to build five more buildings to solve accommodation problem of students.

He said the university administration was aware of the accommodation problem being faced by teachers and students and considering plans which would be launched soon.

Mr Gul said that teachers had an important role to play in shaping a society and their duty was not only to impart education but also to act as role models for students and display a high moral character, said a press release issued here on Tuesday.

He stressed that teachers should fulfil their responsibilities. The courses and their syllabus should be regularly reviewed and revised and updated to bring it on a par with other teaching institutions of the world.

The vice-chancellor said that training courses and workshops allowed interaction among people of different thoughts and one could learn from such gatherings. He said that training workshops also enhanced the teaching qualities of teachers.

Speaking on the occasion, Zoology Department chairperson Dr Naheed Ali highlighted the aims and objectives of the workshop. She expressed the hope that the workshop would enhance teaching skills and knowledge about the subject as well as give college teachers an opportunity to interact with faculty members.

The workshop was jointly organized by the National Core Group in Life Sciences, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Department of Zoology. Teachers from colleges of Peshawar and Mardan division were invited to the workshop.

Dean, Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, Dr Javed Khan, chairperson of the department Dr Naheed Ali, Dr Akram Shah and faculty members were present on the occasion.
