South Asian Games likely to be postponed

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8: The Olympic Council of South Asia is strongly tipped to endorse the decision to postpone the 10th South Asian Games which are scheduled to be held in Colombo in August this year.

"It is the executive Committee of Olympic Council of South Asia which is authorized to endorse the decision," said the director-general of Pakistan Sports Board, Brig Arif Mehmud Siddiqui.

"The Executive Committee members will go along with the organizers' decision to postpone the Games for at least a year," he added.

The Island nation's Olympic officials postponed the 10th edition of South Asian Games after tsunami hit several countries along the coast of Indian Ocean, including Sri Lanka.

The executive committee meeting of Olympic Council of South Asia is expected to be convened soon.

PSB official said the training camps of some disciplines in which Pakistan was to feature at 10th South Asian Games would be wound up to resume later.

However, the training camps for Islamic Games, to be held in four Saudi Arabian cities from April 8 to 20 this year, will continue.

These include the camps of wrestling, weightlifting, football, athletics, swimming, tennis, table tennis, and taekwondo.-APP
