Opposition files motion in Senate on Dr Khan issue

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8: Four opposition members have submitted an adjournment motion to the Senate Secretariat to discuss a report of the US State Department declaring Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan a 'traitor'.

According to the parliamentary secretary of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD), Izhar Amrohvi, the motion has been signed by Dr Abdullah Riar and Syed Sajjad Bokhari of the People's Party Parliamentarians, Asfandyar Wali Khan of the Awami National Party and Prof Khurshid Ahmed of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal.

THE MOTION STATES: "An official report on a State Department website quotes a senior Bush administration official as saying that Pakistanis regard Dr A.Q. Khan as a traitor.

The report is till on display on the Washington File, an official site of the State Department, which quotes President Musharraf as telling the US president that he believed it.

"The matter is very serious and is of national public importance which needs discussion on the floor of the house adjourning the business of the Senate." Mr Amrohvi said the opposition was also planning to move an adjournment motion on the statement of Gen Musharraf that there were 15 options for the Kashmir resolution.

He said through that motion, the opposition would ask the government to present each and every option before the parliament, which had the authority to make final decision on such an important national issue. He said the motion was expected to be submitted in a couple of days.
