Politicians, ulema oppose changes in curricula


KARACHI, Dec 6: Various political and student leaders, MPAs, ulema and educationists at a conference on Monday unanimously resisted changes in the educational set-up of the country and announced their support to the Islami Jamiat Talaba in its campaign.

The national conference was organized by the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) in connection with its campaign against secularization of Pakistan at the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Karachi.

Leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organization (APMSO) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) attended the conference.

The Chairman of the APMSO and MPA, Faisal Sabzwari, who attended the conference on special invitation stressed for peace at educational institutions and harmony among student groups for the progress and prosperity of the country and promotion of education.

Mr Sabzwari appreciated the IJT for inviting him at the conference and assured that his organization would support it in issues, which it considered of national importance and justified.

"We should continue holding talks and invite each other at events to listen to each other's point of view," he said, adding that neither Pakistan nor Islam were the personnel property of anyone.

The MPA of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, Rafique Engineer, in said his party believed that Pakistan was a Islamic republic and it would not allow anyone, not even a military dictator to impose his personnel agenda, borrowed from abroad, in the country.

Supporting the IJT in its campaign against changes in curricula, he said every national or local issue should be debated in the parliament. He asked students to initiate a collective struggle against the autocratic rule in the country.

Noted columnist and analyst Shahnawaz Farooqui said the West wanted to deprive more than one billion Muslims around the globe of their Islamic identity, for the fear that Muslims might stand against Western values, considering them against their religion and religious values.

President MMA Karachi Hafiz Muhammad Taqi, MMA Deputy Parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, Nasrullah Shajjee, Maulana Adil from Jamia Binori, the Nazim-i-Aala of the IJT, Zubair Gondal, President PTI Karachi Fazl Kareem and others also spoke.

A number of resolutions were adopted on the occasion; condemning the US intervention into educational affairs of Pakistan, establishment of the Aga Khan Education Board, and changes in the curricula on directives from abroad. - PPI
