KARACHI, Nov 4: Chief of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that there is no move under consideration to form a grand alliance of opposition parties against the government.

However, he added, the opposition would chalking out a coordinated programme to bring an end to the dictatorship and get supremacy of Constitution and democracy restored in the country.

He was responding to newsmen's questions at Jamia Binnoria which he visited on Thursday to offer his condolences to the bereaved and colleagues of Mufti Jameel Ahmad and Maulana Nazeer Ahmad.

Qazi Saheb said that the MMA and ulema had decided to go to people as the government had failed to ensure protection to the life and property of common man. He said the government's policies had made the people believe that their life, property, honour and dignity were no more secure.

As no institution has been left intact for people to seek justice, they were left with no option but to act on their own to achieve the objective, he added. He accused Gen Pervez Musharraf of pursuing US agenda, saying that all American policies were controlled by Zionist lobby.

By making Pakistan 'a frontline state' to serve the interests of the United States, the Musharraf government had lost credibility and his continued leadership was no more in the national interest, he said. "We request the whole nation to join us in our struggle to safeguard the future of every citizen."

He said that MMA's mass contact drive would start with a public meeting in Karachi on Nov 18 followed by more such rallies in Multan (Dec 5), Lahore (Dec 12) and Rawalpindi (Dec 19). The future line of action would be announced at the rallies, he added.

About Gen Musharraf's recent proposal on the solution of Kashmir, Qazi Saheb said it appeared detrimental to the national stand on the issue and the entire struggle for Kashmir.

He pointed out: "It was India which had gone to the UN where a resolution for holding a plebiscite in Kashmir was adopted. As such, any proposal contrary to the UN resolution will neither be in our national interest nor will it be in the interest of the people of Kashmir."

Qazi Hussain Ahmad deplored the series of terrorist attacks on ulema and places of worship in Karachi, and described it as a deep-rooted conspiracy. By giving such incidents the colour of sectarian unrest, those involved in the conspiracy wanted to defame and discredit religious figures, institutions, seminaries and parties.

He condemned the government for not taking action against the killers involved in the assassination of Mufti Shamzai despite the fact that the suspects were identified. The government and its secret agencies, he said, had failed to expose those forces and elements involved in the assassinations and terrorist acts.

After offering fateha, the MMA chief along with Qari Mohammad Usman of JUI-F and some JI leaders, visited the bereaved families and offered condolences.

Later, speaking at an Iftar party at Eidgah Park, Bihar Colony, Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that Gen Musharraf's roadmap was designed by Washington and would lead the nation to US slavery. He urged people to struggle for their 'freedom'.

Seeking cooperation from all democratic forces in the MMA's struggle for the restoration of real democracy in the country, Qazi Saheb expressed the hope that unity and struggle would lead to the 'burial of dictatorship'.
