KARACHI: Environment drive after Eid, says adviser

KARACHI, Oct 9: The Sindh Chief Minister's Adviser on Environment, Noman Saigol, on Saturday directed the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to inspect drainage systems in Karachi and other cities of the province since complaints were being received about the mixing of sewerage water with potable water.

Presiding over a weekly meeting at SEPA's office in Karachi, he asked the agency's officials to remain in touch with concerned city and district governments and ensure that drainage and sewerage lines were being laid as per rules and regulations to avoid disruption in other civic facilities.

Mr Saigol said a campaign would be launched after the holy month of Ramazan for improvement of environment, especially for controlling the supply of polluted water to citizens.

MNAs, MPAs, nazims, town health officers besides federal and provincial ministers would also be involved in the campaign, he added. He maintained that the Karachi Traffic Police would also observe a "Traffic Week" during which steps would be taken for improvement of vehicular traffic system and controlling smoke-emitting vehicles.

On the occasion, he directed SEPA's authorities to make progress in constituting an environmental tribunal.

The adviser was informed the said tribuna would start functioning after nominations of two technical members were made.

The meeting was told that a campaign against smoke-emitting vehicles had been launched earlier, 1,100 vehicle-owners were warned, 270 vehicles challaned, and five vehicles were confiscated.- PPI
