MMA offers review of all amendments

QUETTA, Sept 24: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal is ready to review all constitutional amendments made since the Bhutto era so that opposition parties can launch a combined struggle against President Pervez Musharraf, says Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The MMA leader said this at public meetings held in Kuchlak and a Madressah in the Pashtoonabad area on Friday. Stressing the need to restore the supremacy of parliament, Maulana Fazl said that a unified opposition movement was necessary to uphold the constitution, strengthen democratic institutions and stabilize the country's political system.

The MMA leader said that political parties should not criticize the alliance for supporting the 17th Amendment, adding that such an attitude would only weaken the opposition and would only benefit the president.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman assured that the MMA would fully cooperate with all political parties for reviewing all controversial amendments made in the constitution from the time of late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto till the induction of the 17th Amendment, adding that all consensus amendments, including the declaring of Qadyanis as non-Muslims and other Islamic clauses would not be touched.

MMA leader criticized parties dubbing the alliance as the president's 'B' team for endorsing the 17th Amendment and said that they had assured Gen Musharraf of supporting him if he made changes in the Hudood and blasphemy laws besides changing the educational curriculum.

Referring to trading of allegations and counter-allegations, Maulana Fazl said that it demoralise the people and strengthen the position of President Musharraf, adding that such an irresponsible behaviour should be avoided.

The JUI leader urged opposition parties to cooperate with each other to stop what he termed extra-constitutional methods of military rulers and said that politicians should realize that rulers want to divide opposition parties.

He accused President Musharraf of deviating from the promise to relinquish the post of chief of army staff by Dec 31 and said that the president's irresponsible attitude would plunge the nation into chaos, adding that it was not in the interest of the the country.

The MMA leader once again promised that the alliance would never compromise on principles in connection with the enforcement of Shariat in the country and said that it was vital for delivering the nation from problems confronted by the nation.

He criticized the military operation in Wana and the government's move to support United States in Afghanistan and Iraq and said that America was not trustworthy as it was in the imperialistic power's interest to occupy the Muslim lands to exploit resources.

Expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people on the occasion of the anniversary of the attempt to torch the Al Aqsa Mosque, he condemned the attempt and other atrocities committed by Israeli forces and urged Muslim countries to condemn the Israeli government.

Accusing the West, especially the US, of using media to maligning Islam as being a terrorist religion, he said that no religion preached terrorism and no society in the world approved terrorist acts.

He said that America had failed to prove that Osama bin Laden or Al Qaeda or Taliban were behind the 9/11 attacks, adding that similarly Washington had also failed to recover WMDs in Iraq, adding that the US had ulterior motives for capturing Baghdad and Kabul.

USE OF FORCE: MMA leader Dr Muhammad Zubair Abul Khair has cautioned the government that the use of force to resolve political issues will harm integrity of the country, and demanded an end to military operations in Wana and other areas of the tribal belt.

Speaking at a press conference at the press club on Friday, he said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal would launch a movement against President Musharraf if the military ruler did not give up his uniform as required under the 17th Amendment.

He said a crucial meeting of the Supreme Council of the MMA would be held on Saturday to discuss the issue and decide a future course of action. Dr Zubair said that military operation in Wana and construction of Gwadar seaport against wishes of the local population was a conspiracy against Pakistan, adding that such policies would benefit enemies of the country. He bitterly criticized the toppling of the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
