KARACHI, Sept 23: An anti-terrorism court formally indicted on Thursday 10 activists of the Al Qaeda-linked Jundullah group in the case of corps commander's convoy attack, which resulted in the death of 10 people, including six army personnel.
Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2, who is conducting trial inside the Central Prison, fixed Oct 4 for recording statements of prosecution witnesses after the defendants denied charges and pleaded "not guilty".
Ataur Rehman alias Ibrahim, Shahzad Ahmed Bajwah, Yaqoob Saeed, Uzair Ahmed, Shoaib Siddiqui, Danish Inam, Najeebullah, Khurrum Saifullah, Shahzad Mukhtar and Khalid Rao were charged with a series of offences, including attack on the motorcade of Lt-Gen Ahsan Saleem Hayat, on June 10 on old Clifton bridge, which resulted in the death of six army personnel, three policemen and a passerby.
The Jundullah men were charged with the offences under Sections 302, 324, 404 and 34 of PPC, Section 7 of the Anti- Terrorist Act, 1997, and Section 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Act. Adnan Shah alias Tipu, Mohammed Qasim, Maaz, Shahab, Bilal, Tayyeb, Hammad and Fasih have been declared absconders.
MURDER CASE: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 adjourned the hearing of a murder case against a worker of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, who carried Rs3 million reward on his arrest, after recording statements of two prosecution witnesses.
The judge fixed Friday for recording statements of other prosecution witnesses after recording statements of Mohammed Ashraf, a milk seller, and Mohammed Akhtar, maternal nephew of the deceased woman.
Kamran alias Asif alias Uncle alias Mehmood was charged with killing a passer by woman and attempting to kill policemen during a shootout with police party on May 19 this year in Sector 15-A of the Buffer Zone under Sections 302, 353 and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code. He was also charged with the possession of arms and ammunition and explosive materials.
According to prosecution, represented by special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum, Inspector Usman Asghar, along with a police party, raided house No. R-1272, Al-Mubashir Building after receiving information about the presence of the LJ man. It was alleged that the accused opened fire on the police party to avoid his arrest.
