ISLAMABAD, Sept 15: The Election Commission of Pakistan decided on Wednesday to bar 34 political parties from contesting elections by not allotting election symbols to them in future if they failed to submit their audited accounts within a month.
The National Alliance, the Millat Party (now a component of Pakistan Muslim League) and the National People's Party are included in the list of parties which would be barred if they failed to provide the required documents.
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the commission held to scrutinize the statements of accounts submitted by 59 political parties. Chief Election Commissioner Irshad Hasan Khan presided over the meeting.
The commission had earlier asked political parties to submit their audited accounts complete with annual income, sources of funds, assets and liabilities. Of the 59 political parties, the statements of accounts of the following 45 were found in order.
These are: Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam (Fazlur Rehman), Pakistan Ittehad Tehrik, Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Pakistan, Sindh National Front, Pakistan People's Party (Shaheed Bhutto), Pakistan Awami Party, Jamiat Ulama-i-Pakistan (Niazi), Pak Muslim Alliance, Islami Tehreek Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League (Qayyum), Pakistan Saraiki Party, Tehreek-i-Wafaq Pakistan, Jamiat Ulama-i-Islam (Samiul Haq), Muttahidda Qaumi Movement, Hazara Qaumi Mahaz, National Workers Party, Pakistan Gharib Party, Seraiki Sooba Movement Pakistan, Tehreek-i-Istiqlal, Swabi Qaumi Mahaz, Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarians, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Pakistan Awami Tehreek, Tameer-i-Pakistan Party, Balochistan National Party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Jamhoori Wattan Party, Pakistan People's Party (Sherpao), Markazi Jamiat Ulama-i-Pakistan (Fazal Karim), Pakistan Awami Tehreek-i-Inqilab, Pakistan Muslim League (Functional), Pakistan Muslim League, Pakistan Democratic Party, Pashtoon Khwa Mili Awami Party Pakistan, Mohib-e-Wattan Nowjwan Inqilabion Ki Anjuman, Jamiat Ulama-e-Pakistan (Noorani), Istiqlal Party, Jamaat Ahle Hadith Pakistan (Sheikhupuri), Pakistan Muslim League (Qasim), Jamiat Mushaikh Pakistan, Markazi Jamiat Ahl-i-Hadith Pakistan (Sajid Mir), Shan-i-Pakistan, Pak Wattan Party and Pakhtoon Khawah Qaumi Party.
During the meeting the commission also considered the application of Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Pakistan) for exemption from filing the statement of accounts on the ground that their executive committee was under arrest. The commission decided to route this application through the Superintendent of Jail concerned within 30 days.
The commission also studied an application of Pakistan People's Party submitted by its chairman Rao Sikandar Iqbal and decided not to take any action at this stage.
The application concerned about non-operation of accounts since the unification of PPP (Patriot) and PPP (Sherpao) had taken effect in June 2004. The commission has also issued reminders to the following 34 political parties to submit their accounts.
These are: Awami National Party, Awami Himayat Tehreek Pakistan, Azmat-i-Islam Movement, Balochistan National Democratic Party, Balochistan National Movement, Ittehad Milli Hazara, Islamic Siasi Tehreek, Jamote Qaumi Movement, Kakar Jamhoori Party Pakistan, Labour Party Pakistan, Markazi Jamaat Ahle Hadith, Mohajir Ittehad Tehreek, National Alliance, National People's Party (Workers Group), Nizam-i-Mustafa Party, Pakistan Brohi Party, Pakistan Freedom Party, Pakistani Jamhoori Aman Party, Pakistan Progressive Party (Surriya Farman Group), Pakistan Progressive Party, Paksitan Shia Political Party, Pakistan Workers Party, Punjab National Party, Progressive Democratic Party, Qaumi Jamhoori Party, Sindh Urban Rural Alliance, Tehreek Jamhoriat Pakistan, Tehreek-i-Masawaat, Tehreek-i-Hussainia Pakistan, National Awami Party Pakistan, Millat Party and National People's Party.
The statements of account of 11 political parties were found to be not audited by a chartered accountant as required under the law. The commission returned these statements to the parties concerned for re-submission within 30 days.
