PESHAWAR: Action against doctors joining 'illegal' bodies

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, Sept 6: The government has decided to take action against doctors who have joined unregistered organizations which are being run with the backing of political parties in the province.

Talking to Dawn, sources said that of late scores of organizations had sprung up in the province representing different classes of health professionals. These organizations did nothing except making illogical demands, the sources said and added that when their demands were not met they gave strike calls which seriously affected the healthcare delivery system.

"A decision has been taken with a view to improving the health delivery system. Action will be taken against doctors who fail to comply with section 26 of the Government Service Conduct Rules, 1987," the sources said.

The sources said the health department had started compiling a data of doctors affiliated with different associations. Members of these organizations are not only involved in activities unbecoming to a noble profession but they also bunk duties in the government hospitals on various pretexts, they added.

After receiving numerous public complaints and suggestions of the health department officials, the government decided to take action against doctors involved in political activities which would ensure improvement in the healthcare delivery system, an official said.

According to the sources, there are several organizations which claim to be representatives of either the house job doctors or trainee medical officers and all of them operated illegally.
