KARACHI: Nazim seeks LGs' role in police dept affairs
KARACHI, Sept 4: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan said on Saturday that the law and order situation could improve in the country if the police department worked under the district governments.
He stated this while talking to a 26-member delegation of trainee officers who visited the police academy at Civic Centre.
Nazim Karachi said that positive changes could be brought about in the police department. "The CCPO is answerable to the Nazim under the SLGO and has to reply a query by the nazim within 45 days".
He felt that changes in some clauses of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance are required to make it effective.
Replying to queries, he said brothels and dens of crime and gambling could not operate without the patronage of police while encroachments thrive because of nexus of police and corrupt officials.
He also briefed them about completed and ongoing development projects in Karachi.
EDUCATION: The city government is making efforts for improving the quality of education and establishing new educational institutions for which an allotment of 31 per cent had been made of the Rs31 billion CDGK budget.
Last year, 32 new colleges were opened and Rs80 million spent on the construction and rehabilitation of existing schools, said the City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, while speaking as the chief guest at the award distribution ceremony of Programmer Secondary School, North Karachi.
The city nazim pointed out that education had been made free till Matric while girls from classes VI to VIII were being provided free textbooks besides a monthly stipend of Rs100.
He laid stress on female education, adding an educated girl can make the whole family educated.
He said children were the trust of a nation with the teachers, and their training on right lines, character building and mental reformation were the responsibility of teachers and parents.
Naimat told the gathering that Pakistan was an ideological nation, which came into being in the name of Islam, adding that such a great responsibility lay upon the new generation to transform Pakistan into an ideological state.
The Nazim Karachi said that a lot of talented people were available in Karachi who just needed encouragement.
He said the existing difference between government and private schools should be done away with, informing that even government schools in Karachi's backward areas like Lyari and North Karachi had produced 100 per cent results in the board exams.
Naimatullah Khan said results in government schools had registered a tremendous rise from the existing 30 to 70 per cent and efforts were on for further improvement.
