PML election schedule today

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Sept 3: The ruling PML's election authority is expected to announce a schedule for the election of provincial office-bearers on Saturday (today), secretary-general Chaudhry Zaheeruddin says.

The elections are due to be held on Sunday. The provincial council will elect a president, a secretary-general, an information secretary, a finance secretary and senior vice-presidents.

Over 1,100 people will use their right to vote. They include Senators, MNAs and MPAs, who are ex-officio members of the council. Mr Zaheeruddin said foreign diplomats and observers from other parties would also be present at the Muslim League House to see the transparency of the electoral process.

He said the party leadership would work to implement the agenda of President Musharraf and make Pakistan an enlightened Islamic democratic state. Gen Musharraf's policies, Mr Zaheeruddin said, had already brought the country out of difficult situation and the PML would continue to pursue them to achieve still higher goals.

He said in the Punjab it was Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi who was working day and night for the welfare of the people. He believed that as chief minister and provincial president of the PML, Mr Elahi would set new records of progress.

According to him, a number of resolutions would be adopted by the council members to repose confidence in the leadership of President Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, PML President Shujaat Husain and Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi.
