DADU, Aug 25: The Dadu District Council in a resolution unanimously adopted on Wednesday expressed concern over acute shortage of water in Sindh and demanded release of full share of water to the province.

Members of the council said they feared that if Sindh's water share was not released by the Indus River System Authority in 15 days, paddy, cotton and other crops would sustain 60 per cent losses in the province.

The session, presided over by Zahid Hussain Jatoi, adopted 16 resolutions. Sikandar Leghari tabled a resolution, stating that Punjab was not releasing Sindh's share of water, which had affected crops in the province.

He said the shortage of water had led to drought-like situation in different parts of Sindh. The council decided to send a letter to Irsa and the federal government to release complete share of water to Sindh during the current season.

Abida Qamar Solangi in a resolution demanded to start work on the Indus Highway from Sehwan to Ratodero. The council also passed another resolution of Ms Solangi, which demanded construction of a bridge over the Indus River to connect Nao Goth and Kandiaro. The council decided that fund would be allocated for the purpose.

Naima Baloch complained that Rs2.5 million had been cut from the share of the Jamshoro Union Council. She demanded an inquiry into the matter. Meanwhile, nazims of seven union councils walked out of the session and held a demonstration outside the council hall to protest against non-release of funds under different heads to their councils. They alleged that the district government was releasing funds only to selected union council nazims.
