2 Kashmiri leaders detained

SRINAGAR, Aug 20: Police in occupied Kashmir on Friday detained two Kashmiri leaders, APHC's Syed Ali Geelani and Javed Mir, an officer said, in a move apparently aimed at keeping them away from condoling the death of a commander who was killed recently in an encounter here.

"Dozens of policemen ringed Syed Ali Geelani's house in Srinagar in the early hours on Friday and prevented him from coming out," the detained leader's spokesman, Shabir Ahmed, said.

Mr Ahmed said Geelani, who heads the hardline faction of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference, was scheduled to visit Anantnag to meet the family of commander Manzoorul Islam, who was killed by Indian troops in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Another Kashmiri leader, Javed Mir was detained along with nine of his supporters on the outskirts of Anantnag, 50 kilometres south of Srinagar, a police officer said.

"We have detained Geelani and Mir as there is tension in Anantnag," a police officer said, adding their presence in the town would "aggravate" the situation. Thousands of people took the streets in Anantnag on Thursday to protest Islam's death.
