KARACHI: Four shot dead in separate incidents

KARACHI, Aug 19: A policeman committed suicide in Mochko police station on Thursday. Forty-two-year-old Maqsood Ahmed shot himself with his official sub-machine gun at 1.30pm, said a duty officer of the police station.

"Hearing the gunfire, we rushed to the next room, where Maqsood was lying in a pool of blood with his service weapon in his hand," said a duty officer.

Police said that Maqsood had been serving in the department for the last 22 years, and apparently had no problem. He was married and had sent his family to Rahimyar Khan, and was presently living in his police quarters, they added.

The associates of the deceased said that he apparently had no problem in the department, and might have ended his life due to some domestic problems. Following the incident, he was shifted to the Murshid Hospital and then referred to the Civil Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

SHOT DEAD: A former lecturer of a government college was shot dead by unknown persons in old city area of Bhimpura falling in the limits of Eidgah police station on Thursday.

Police said Abdus Sattar, 38, was standing in the Bhimpura Salar Compound on Wali Mohammad Hasan Ali Road when unknown persons on a motorcycle shot him in the head and escaped.

The victim was rushed to Civil Hospital where he died during treatment. Police said Abdus Sattar was earning his livelihood by giving tuitions. A young man was shot dead by bandits when he tried to resist a cell phone snatching attempt in Lyari late Wednesday night.

Police said Imran, 30, was intercepted by two armed suspects near Kakri ground, who shot him and escaped after Imran tried to put up resistance. The injured was taken to Civil Hospital where he died during treatment.

Police said the victim was a resident of Paper Market, Shahrah-e-Liaquat. In another incident in Lyari, a young man shot dead his friend over a petty matter in the limits of Kalri police station.

Police said 22-year-old Shakil, after an exchange of hot words, shot his friend Asif at point blank range in Nayaabad late Wednesday night. Asif was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds early Thursday morning.

Police said Asif had suffered a bullet in his chest. Police claimed to have arrested Shakil, and recovered the weapon. However, the SHO, Kalri police station failed to explain the nature of dispute between the friends which led to the incident.

A cattle trader was shot dead by robbers in Malir early Thursday morning. Police said that cattle trader Ayaz was in his cattle pen when bandits barged into the place in Shah Latif Town and demanded cash.

Ayaz resisted and was shot by the robbers who fled after taking some cash. Police shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy examination.

ACCIDENT: A 40-year-old man died in a road accident in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on Thursday. Police said Mushtaq, was on his motorcycle when a speeding truck knocked him down near Bhatiabad. The wounded was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The errant truck driver escaped from the spot.

CELL PHONE SNATCHERS: Police on Thursday arrested a gang of four suspects allegedly involved in cell phone snatching and recovered weapons and valuables from them.

Gulshan Town Police Officer Abdul Khaliq Shaikh told Dawn that ten cell phones, four pistols and a motorcycle were recovered from the suspects. The motorcycle was snatched from the limits of Shahrae Faisal police station, he added.

Police claimed that the suspects, Imran, Mohammad Akmal, Abdul Qadir and Rasheed, had snatched jewellry from a woman in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, which was also recovered from their possession.
