Sindh facing 40pc water shortage: PA told

KARACHI, Aug 18: Sindh Minister for Irrigation and Power Nadir Akmal Leghari has said that Sindh is experiencing water shortage to the extent of 40 per cent.

Speaking in response to a point of order raised by an MMA member, Mr Hameedullah during the Sindh Assembly session on Wednesday, the minister said that efforts would be made to ensure supply of water to tail-enders

The MMA member had pointed out that there was no water in Jhol Branch, in Golarchi taluka of Badin district where rice cultivation was about to start. He feared that in case the growers failed in cultivating a good crop due to water shortage, not only the growers but also the government would suffer a major loss.

The consideration of a resolution presented by Mr Hameedullah was deferred by Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah. Through his resolution, the member wanted the situation in Iraq discussed in the house, arguing that it was an issue of the entire Ummah.

Law Minister Chaudhry Iftekhar contended that treasury members also shared the sentiments. He said the resolution would be adopted unanimously after consultation with other members. Till such time, he added, the resolution should be deferred. -APP
