LAHORE: Metered parking in Lahore - FWO to develop LDA Avenue

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, Aug 16: The Lahore Development Authority has decided to develop a 1,000-kanal business centre in Jauhar Town, raise the maximum height limit of public buildings to 65 feet and introduce metered parking in the city.

The decisions were taken at a meeting held here on Monday with District Nazim Mian Amer in the chair. The Nazim said international tenders should be invited for the design of the proposed business centre.

The Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency was directed to make arrangements for starting metered parking and improve parking arrangements between Hafeez Centre and Pace on Gulberg's Main Boulevard. The metered parking means that vehicle owners will have to pay according to the time recorded by a clock.

The authority also ordered action against the management of a five-star hotel for lining up cars on the Shahrah-i-Quaid-i-Azam on the pretext of security checking in case it did not make the checking arrangements within its premises.

It decided to award the LDA Avenue development contract to the Frontier Works Organization for Rs5.786 billion. It will start development work within a month and complete it by December 2005. A sum of Rs95.9 million was sanctioned for completing the Mohlanwal Scheme development works.

The authority also decided to increase the salaries of its employees by 15 per cent and allow transfer of plots in its schemes to the legal heirs of owners without the payment of transfer fee. It was also decided to allot two five-marla plots to the exemptees in the Gujjarpura Housing Scheme instead of one 10-marla plot.

DCO Khalid Sultan, LDA Director-General Akhlaq Tarrar, Nishtar Town Nazim Rafiq Hasrat, Ravi Town Nazim Amer Munir and Wasa and Tepa managing directors attended the meeting.

CNG-FITTED CABS: The Punjab government has decided to launch a CNG-fitted 800cc cab scheme in the city. This was stated by provincial transport minister Rana Shamshad while presiding over a meeting on Monday. He said the scheme would be launched soon.

Rana Shamshad said the chief minister had approved the scheme to provide employment opportunities to youth besides facilitating passengers. He said after launching it in Lahore the project would be introduced in other major cities as well.

Under the scheme, five per cent subsidy would be given on mark-up, he said, adding the department would finalize the fare per kilometre. To run cabs by drivers in uniform would be mandatory, he added.

He said certain changes were being introduced in the transport sector to bring it in line with the national transport policy. The strategy to build one-design bus stops in all major cities had been evolved.

He said driving training schools in the private sector would also be established. A computerized system was being developed to check vehicles' fitness. He directed the officers concerned to complete the ongoing projects in time.
