KARACHI, Aug 4: The elections to four seats of the University of Karachi syndicate from teachers constituencies were held on Wednesday.

The registrar of the university, Prof Syed Sikandar Mehdi, released the polling results of three seats, while saying that results of the election to the professors' seat had been withheld.

Dr Rafeeq Alam Khan, Dr Majid Mumtaz and Tayyaba Shaheen Zafar were elected from the constituencies of associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers respectively. They would hold office for three years.

Result of the professors' constituency was withheld after one contestant of the constituency had disputed a cast vote. To know whether the disputed vote was valid or not, the varsity had decided to seek legal opinion, said a source, adding if the disputed vote was declared invalid, both the candidates would be declared to have secured an equal number of votes.

Talking about options in case of a tie between the two candidates, a senior varsity teacher said if the candidates in question agree, each of them could hold office for one and a half years.

Otherwise, a decision could be reached through toss or after re-polling among the candidates in question, Dr Nikhat Siddiqui, Dr Nasiruddin Khan, and Prof Junaid Siddiqui, Prof Salim Memon and Prof Akhtar Saeed.
