KARACHI, Aug 2: A high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim on Monday reviewed the overall law and order situation in the province
, besides security measures for important government functionaries during their visits to the province.
Sindh Home Minister Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, Chief Secretary Mohammad Aslam Sanjrani, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Syed Anwar Haider, IG Syed Kamal Shah, Rangers' Director-General Maj Gen Javed Zia, Secretary Information Mehtab Akbar Rashdi and senior officials of concerned departments attended the meeting.
Syed Kamal Shah gave detailed briefing about security measures in the province, whereas DG Rangers suggested recommendations to make security measures effective in view of the overall security situation in the country.
Dr Rahim emphasised that vehicles should be checked without giving prior notice in different parts of the city, and appealed to the people and elected representatives to co-operate with the law-enforcement agencies in order to make the campaign effective.
The meeting also reviewed security steps in Tharparkar district for the upcoming by-election. The chief minister said that he had directed the law-enforcing agencies to provide protection to all the candidates for by-election, including Mr Shaukat Aziz, and to implement these orders strictly.
He maintained that in Tharparkar police and the Rangers personnel would be deployed to ensure peaceful and free voting. He directed the chief secretary to make necessary arrangements in the light of the chief election commissioner's orders.
He further directed the officials concerned to keep a vigilant eye on the movement of weapons inside and outside the district, so that any mishap could be avoided.
"Section 144 should be imposed, if needed, in this regard," he said, adding that the national and international media should be provided all facilities to monitor the by-election. He reiterated his resolve to take all possible measures to maintain law and order in the area during by-election.
FEDERAL MINISTERS: Federal Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal, Federal Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat and Federal Minister for Petroleum Naurez Shakoor on Monday called on Dr Rahim at the Chief Minister's House.
They discussed various issues with Mr Rahim, including the pace of development work and the law and order situation in the city.
LAND ALLOTMENT: Sindh chief minister has taken serious notice of embezzlement and irregularities in allotment of land in Karachi and Sukkur. "It came into my knowledge that practice of transferring of land of poor people on fake documents and other malpractice by land-grabbers in connivance with staff of the Revenue department, particularly registrars, has been continuing unabated for a long time," he said.
Taking cognizance of the situation, he advised the affected people to contact Dr Mohammad Ali, Additional Secretary (Implementation), on phone no 919 in the CM's House, to register their complaints.
He said a stern action would be taken against the people involved in the land fraud and injustices against the innocent people, in the National Accountability Bureau and the Anti-Corruption department. -PPI
