FAISALABAD, July 19: Residents of Samundri protested against the registration of attempted murder case against MPA Khalid Nabi on Monday. The protesters marched on roads and forced the shopkeepers to pull down shutters.

They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the Samundri police and demand for withdrawal of case registered against 28 people, including MPA.

They blocked major roads by erecting barricades and burning tyres for hours disrupting traffic on highways and inter-tehsil roads. Led by the PML leaders of Samundri, they threatened that they would observe a complete strike and hold demonstrations in the tehsil if the case was not withdrawn within 24 hours.

Jamil of Chak 71-GB lodged a complaint with the Samundri city police on Sunday night claiming that a group of armed men, at the behest of MPA Khalid Nabi, intercepted his brother Majeed and shot at and injured him seriously.

Police registered a case against the MPA and more than two dozen other people, including Ghulam Bari, Pervez, Rafiq, Shafiq and Shakil. A number of supporters of the MPA got angry on the registration of the case and held a demonstration against the police.

They also forced the traders to join their strike. Meanwhile, the MPA registered a case with the City police against injured Majeed, Jamil and four others on charge of kidnap of Sajjad from Chak 270-GB.

COP HELD: The Anti-Corruption Establishment arrested a constable and registered a case against him and women police station incharge for receiving illegal gratification from a widow here on Monday.

Kaneez Bibi of Ghulam Muhammadabad alleged that Inspector Sajida Parveen and Constable Habib kept her in illegal custody and freed her on a promise of payment of Rs6,000.

The complainant, on the instructions of ACE officials, visited the women police station on Monday and gave marked currency notes to them. Later, an ACE team arrested Constable Habib and recovered the marked currency notes from his possession. He reportedly confessed that Inspector Sajida had received the bribe. The inspector will be held after preliminary inquiry of the case.
