LARKANA, July 12: The refusal of the administration of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Larkana, to verify the list of deserving students had hampered the process of distributing scholarships among them.

The directorate of research and assessment, Jamshoro had selected 80 students from the district who were admitted to medical and engineering colleges in year 2003-04 from the district for awarding scholarships, sources told this correspondent on Monday.

Each student is expected to get around Rs25,000 per year for the study purpose. On being contacted, the director of the DRA confirmed that the BISE Larkana had asked Rs200 fee per certificate of verification.

The assistant controller of examination in a letter addressed to the director of the DRA on June 6 had informed about the fee. The director said that except the BISE Larkana rest of the education boards had sent verification lists to the DRA without charging any fee.

The DRA had finalized names of around 450 candidates in the province eligible for scholarship. He said that the BISE Hyderabad, Sukkur and Karachi without charging any fee had verified lists but the BISE Larkana authorities were reluctant to do it.

DCO: DCO Dr Badar Ujjan issued show-cause notices to around a dozen high school teachers, including office-bearers of the Government Secondary Teachers Association, Larkana chapter.

The GSTA is protesting against alleged cancellation of selection grades of some teachers by the deputy district officer establishment. The DCO said that the DDO establishment had nothing to do with the departmental promotion committee which was headed by the district nazim. The teachers were asked to submit the reply within seven days otherwise the action would be taken against them.
