Shujaat suggests accountability by judiciary: People in power should also be answerable

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD, July 3: Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain suggested on Saturday that the accountability process should be brought under the supervision of judiciary aimed at making it 'more transparent'.

Talking to workers from different wings of the ruling PML at the Prime Minister's House, he said the practice of holding the members of the past governments accountable should stop and added that the accountability of those in power should be conducted.

He cited criticism of the existing accountability system as reason for the proposed involvement of the judiciary in the process.

The prime minister listened to the party workers' grievances and sought suggestions for reorganization of the PML on a sound footing.

PML parliamentarians, including party secretary-general and Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed and prime minister-in-waiting Shaukat Aziz, and leaders of party's wings of labour, lawyers and youth met the prime minister and discussed with him various issues in a frank manner.

Some of the participants criticized the former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali for ignoring the party workers on certain occasions.

Chaudhry Shujaat asked the critics of Mr Jamali to leave the past and talk about the present and the future.

The PML workers expressed the hope that Mr Aziz, after his election as the prime minister, would continue to consult the party cadres.

Former PML secretary-general Salim Saifullah Khan appreciated ex-prime minister Jamali for declaring 2004 as year of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and proposed that 2006 should be observed as the year of Pakistan Muslim League.

The meeting stressed the need for reorganization of the party in Sindh and the NWFP on a firm footing.

APP adds: The prime minister announced that in the next 40 days he would be holding daily meetings with the party workers to formulate the future strategy. He said 20 more wings would be added to the party fold.

He said the PML and its allies should start preparations for the next general election scheduled to be held in 2007. He said assemblies would complete their term.

Referring to a meeting President General Pervez Musharraf had held with parliamentarians recently, Chaudhry Shujaat said a general complaint raised on the occasion pertained to distribution of development funds.

He said development funds would be allocated constituency-wise so that no one had any objection to it. He announced that development works of the MNAs and MPAs would be renamed as welfare projects.

The prime minister said the government would make every effort to rid the country of the culture of hypocrisy and allegations.

The PML secretary-general assured the meeting that Mr Aziz, as prime minister, would be a true leader of the PML and treat its workers with respect and dignity.

He announced names of presidents and secretaries-general of different wings of the party. Justice (retd) Azam Khan was nominated president of the Lawyers Wing and Aslam Zar as secretary-general; Aleem Adil Shaikh as president of the Youth Wing and Aleem Shah its secretary-general; Inayatullah Kakar as president of the Muslim Students Federation and Nasir Awan its secretary-general; Nilofar Bakhtiar as president of the Women Wing and FaqirHussain Bokhari as president of the Labour Wing.
