LAHORE: Only 11 get A+ grade in matric exams

LAHORE, June 30: A total of 11 students of science group, eight girls and three boys, got A+ grades from a total of 130,465 students, who appeared for the secondary school certificate annual examination for 2004.

The results based on the no-fail no-pass policy, now rolled back by the Punjab Education Department, were declared by Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education chairman Prof Dr Zakariya Butt at board offices on Wednesday.

The preamble to the result shows that overall 1,646 candidates secured A grade, 5,464 B+, 13,919 B, 23,120 C+, 17,116 C, 18,375 D, 25,007 E and 25,799 students were placed in F grade.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Butt said the board would issue result cards even to those candidates who had secured F grade. The board would not mention full word 'Fail' on the result card but simply F grade.

He said the board had decided to give two chances to all those candidates who secured F grade or remained absent in some subjects to improve their grades in respective subject(s) till the secondary school certificate annual examination for 2005.

TOPPERS: The overall first position in the examination was clinched by District Public School for Boys, Okara, student Muhammad Ammar Zia (roll number 118622) by securing 790 marks. He also topped in the science group among boys.

The overall second position was secured by Bushra Hassan (roll number 141533) of the Queen Mary College, Lahore, by securing 788 marks. She also topped in the science group among girls.

The overall third position went to Hassan Raza Hashmi (roll number 120099) of the Government Higher Secondary School, Muridke, Sheikhupura district, as he secured 778 marks. He also secured second position in science group among boys.

According to the group-wise break-down of position-holders, besides overall top position-holders, the third position in science group among boys was secured by Adnan Saeed Shakir (roll number 120201) of the Government Guru Nanak High School, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura district.

In science group among girls, the second position went to Sara Zafar (roll number 110857) of the Crescent Model Higher Secondary School for Girls, Shadman Colony, with 775 marks.

In general group among boys, private candidates Shahid Mahmood (roll number 70999) and Muhammad Aslam (roll number 70996) bagged first and second positions with 705 and 689 marks, respectively. Muhammad Amin (roll number 25764) of the Government High School, Jaithpur, Okara district, got third position with 675 marks.

In general group among girls, all the three positions went to students who appeared from the Farooqia Girls High School, Karim Park, Ravi Road. Afshan Jamshaid (roll number 14854) clinched first position with 738 marks.

Maryam Waqar (roll number 14841) bagged second position with 721 marks. The third position went to Farah Asif Ali (roll number 14857) with 719 marks. Talking to reporters, the toppers expressed their jubilation on securing top positions in the examination.

Answering questions, they said there was a need that the board should further improve the system of conducting examinations. They said the examination should be devised in such a way that should assess students' abilities and talent rather than their cramming skills. They also called for improve men in facilities at examination centres.
