PESHAWAR: 345 outlaws arrested, says SSP

PESHAWAR, June 26: The city police is said to have arrested 101 proclaimed offenders and 244 other outlaws besides seizing a large quantity of weapons from the city suburbs, said a senior official.

Speaking at a press conference at Police Headquarters here on Saturday, SSP (operations) Abid Ali said that the operation against criminals in the outskirts of the city particularly in the so-called 'no-go areas' was launched after the Friday prayers which lasted till Saturday afternoon.

He said police officials faced resistance in some of the localities, adding that no one was hurt in the cross-fire.

According to the sources, the city police intensified their operation after the attempt to kidnap a Mardan-based engineer of the Motorway.

Sources told Dawn that a group of unidentified gunmen had stopped the vehicle of engineer Abdul Haq, a resident of Wana in South Waziristan Agency, near Tore Baba on Ring Road in the city on Friday evening and tried to kidnap him and beat him up after he resisted the kidnapping attempt.

Later, they escaped in his vehicle, the sources said, added that the police had sealed the FIR after registering it.

It was learnt that the operation was intensified in the Badhber and Matani areas after the occurrence of the incident. However, the police has not yet recovered Abdul Haq's vehicle.

During the operation, the police recovered 40 Kalashnikovs, five Kalakovs, 93 pistols, a light machine-gun, 46 riffles, nine grenades, 1,806 cartridges of various weapons, 60 kilogrammes of hashish, 1kg of opium, four kilogrammes of heroin, 28 litres of liquor, 1,600 contraband CDs and pictures and other electronic appliances.
