By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 16: A police official, Haider Beg, who was an active member of the 1992 operation clean-up launched by the then interior minister Naseerullah Babar, was shot dead near his apartment in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Wednesday evening.

Haider Beg was shot near his residence, in Sara Apartments, in the limits of Sachal police who said that two unidentified men on a motorcycle attacked him and fled. He received three bullets and was taken to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sub-inspector Haider Beg, father of two, had first been demoted to the rank of headconstable and then dismissed from police service. His appeal for reinstatement was pending with the police department, officials said. These days, Beg used to drive a taxi to earn livelihood.

During the operation clean-up, he worked with inspectors Zeeshan Kazmi and Sarwar Commando as well as DSP Aslam Khan. Haider Beg also served as the SHO of PIB Colony, Liaquatabad and Surjani Town. He earned fame and was granted promotion for his performance in the arrest of those allegedly involved in burning of the national flag.

Another known figure in the operation clean-up, inspector Taufiq Zahid, was shot dead on April 23 this year. He was killed in a mosque located in block 17 of Federal B Area.

Inspector Zeeshan Kazmi, the key figure of the operation, was shot dead on October 14, 2003. His body, wrapped in a chaadar (cloth sheet) had apparently been thrown out of a moving vehicle and found lying on Khalid Bin Waleed Road, block 2, PECHS. Evidences showed that he had been kidnapped and subjected to torture before being shot dead.

ACCIDENTS: A young boy died and his father was injured when a speeding water tanker (TA-649) crushed them on Manghopir Road on Tuesday night. Police identified the 10-year-old boy as Arbaz Khan and his father as Mohammad Naeem.

Both of them were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Arbaz was pronounced dead and his father was provided treatment. Following the accident, enraged people started pelting stones at passing vehicles.

In Saudabad, Malir, another water tanker knocked down a motorcyclist, Ghulam Husain, 40. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Later, police shifted his body to the Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre for postmortem examination.

The errant driver escaped from the scene of the accident. A man, Mohammad Tariq, 30, died when a hit-and-run vehicle ran over him after he fell on the road after suffering a bullet wound on Tuesday night.

Police said that Tariq was passing by a wedding hall in North Karachi No. 5 1/2. Someone fired a shot and he suffered a bullet wound. As he fell on the main road, an unknown speeding vehicle crushed him. He was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

ELECTROCUTED: A five-year-old boy, Jamaldin, died when an electric wire fell on him in Lyari. Police said the victim was playing near his home in the police line Kalakot when the incident took place. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
