KARACHI, June 14: Eight suspects allegedly involved in the attack on the corps commander's convoy were given in police custody for interrogation and investigation for 14 days.
Judge Syed Aley Maqbool Rizvi of the ATC-1, while granting the remand, directed the police to produce the suspects on June 28. They (police officials) had requested for a 30-day remand.
Mr Rizvi was notified to be in-charge judge of the ATCs shortly before the police produced the suspects before the court as Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3, the in-charge judge, was on a day's leave.
The suspects - Ataur Rehman alias Ibrahim alias Tahir, Shehzad Ahmed, Yaqoob Saeed alias Roomi, Kashif Abdullah alias Uzair, Shoaib Siddiqui alias Usman, Danish Imran alias Shami, Najeebullah alias Atif and Khurram Saifullah alias Anas - were arrested in Al Falah and Model Colony on Sunday.
Police investigators told the court that the suspects were leaders and workers of a new militant outfit, Jundullah. Ataur Rehman and Shehzad were its amir and naib amir.
Seeking a 30-day physical custody of the suspects, they submitted to the court that the Jundullah men were involved in a number of high-profile cases. Police investigators told the court that a thorough investigation was required to eliminate the terrorist network.
Besides, they said, these suspects were required to be grilled thoroughly, enabling the police to recover arms and ammunition on their leads. Judge Rizvi told the investigators that the remand might be extended at a later stage. He asked the investigators to complete their investigation within 14 days.
According to remand reports, the suspects were involved in terrorist activities occurring in Karachi since January. The terrorists' acts included an attack on police station, killing five policemen, attack on a Ranger's vehicle near Baloch Colony, the PACC car bomb blasts and the attack on the convoy of Corps Commander Karachi in which 11 persons, including six army men were killed.
The Boat Basin police had sought the suspects' remand in the convoy attack case. Another main case against the Jundullah men pertained to an attack on Gulistan-e-Johar police station in which five policemen were killed.
The third main case against the suspects pertained to an attack on a Rangers' vehicle near Baloch Colony in which two Rangers' personnel were killed on March 19.
According to the remand papers, Danish Imam, Uzair Ahmed, Khurram Saif and Yaqoob Saeed were arrested on June 13 in Al Fallah and Ataur Rehman, Shehzad Bajwa, Mohammad Shoaib and Najeebullah in the limits of the Model Colony police station, Karachi. The police had announced on Sunday the arrest of the alleged terrorists during a hurriedly-called press conference.
MOSQUES BLAST CASE: An anti-terrorism court on Monday remanded the alleged mastermind of recent bomb blasts in two Shia mosques, granting a 14-day custody to police for interrogation.
Judge Aley Maqbool Rizvi of the ATC-1 gave Gul Hasan alias Ali Haider in police custody and ordered the investigation officer to produce the suspect in court on June 28.
The Mithadar police had sought a 14-day custody of the suspect, a member of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, in the case pertaining to the Hyderi Mosque blast on May 7.According to remand papers, four LJ activists were still absconding in the case. They were Asif Choto, Abdul Salam alias Wazeer Khan, Qasim alias Fahad and Mufti Ubaid. The suicide bomber was identified as constable Akbar Niazi.
The Jamshed Quarters police, in the meantime, had sought the remand of Gul Hasan in the Imambargah blast case, which occurred on May 31.
The suicide attack in the imambargah was carried out by Muhammad Ali. Besides, the suspect was also remanded for interrogation in a case pertaining to the possession of a TT pistol.
