'Stringent' steps for Karachi likely: Jamali says he won't resign
ISLAMABAD, June 11: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Friday condemned the terrorist attack on the convoy of corps commander of Karachi and hinted at 'stringent measures' to prevent such incidents in future.
Talking to newsmen after a meeting of the ruling parliamentary party at the parliament house, he said the meeting had adopted a resolution which condemned Thursday's terrorist act and urged the government to take all steps to control such incidents in future.
The premier did not elaborate what he meant by stringent measures but said people would know it when these measures were implemented. In reply to a question about the identification of the assailants, he said it would be pre-mature to comment on the matter before the investigation was completed.
About the proposed relief in the coming budget, Mr Jamali said: "President Musharraf has already announced a relief package for farmers and more relief steps would be announced in the budget".
The premier said that he had discussed the proposed expansion of the cabinet with PML president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and hoped that the cabinet would be expanded soon. Asked about his government's position on the implementation of 7th wage award for newspaper employees, he said: "Every issue can be resolved through the spirit of accommodation and through talks. We will try to resolve this matter as well".
Earlier, Mr Jamali presided over the coalition parliamentary party meeting which resolved to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Speaking at the meeting, Chaudhry Shujaat reaffirmed the party's support to Mr Jamali in the reported move to remove him.
The sources claimed that Mr Jamali had decided, after consultations with his loyalists inside and outside the party, not to tender resignation even if he was asked by the powers that be to do so.
