GUJRANWALA, June 11: A dacoit was shot dead by watchmen at Haider Colony in Garjakh here on Friday. Watchmen Muhammad Akhter and Abdul Rauf and two citizens were patrolling the area when they noticed two motorcyclists roaming around.

When asked to identify themselves, the riders whipped out pistols and opened fire on the watchmen, injuring Muhammad Akhter. The watchmen returned fire, injuring one of the outlaws.

The other left the motorcycle on the road and escaped. The watchmen caught the injured dacoit and informed the police. He was rushed to the DHQ hospital in critical condition where he breathed his last.

The Garjakh police said that the outlaws had snatched the motorcycle from one Muhammad Younus on Gadafi Road a few hours ago.

PROTEST: The protest campaign of transporters continued for the third consecutive day in Ghakkhar on Friday. Transporters went on strike against the government decision to stop plying of wagons between Kamoki and Ghakkhar to pave the way for running of franchized buses.

The wagon owners staged sit-in along the GT Road in Ghakkhar to protest against the decision. Their leaders said the decision would render 300,000 people jobless. They said their protest would continue till the acceptance of their demand. They demanded that wagons should be allowed to ply on the GT Road.

BAR'S STRIKE: The Punjab Bar Council would support Gujrat lawyers' protest against DPO. This was stated by PBC member and Gujranwala Bar Association former president Navid Anwar Navid while talking to a delegation of Gujrat lawyers here on Friday.
