KARACHI: ATC refuses to extend remand of Harkat men


KARACHI, May 31: Judge Arshad Noor Khan of Anti-Terrorism Court on Monday refused to extend police remand of as many as six activists of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Alami, arrested weeks back in explosive cases , and directed the investigation officer to submit charge-sheets against them on June 7.

Investigation officer sought extension of further physical remand of the accused, but their request was turned down by the court, observing that no sufficient ground had been made out for extension of remand. After the rejection of application, the accused were sent to jail.

Naveed Hamid, Imran Khan, Mohammad Abid, Syed Khurrum Shahab, Mohammad Nasir and Mohammad Amir were arrested by th police on May 23 in a raid conducted at a house in Lyari. Police also recovered a huge quantity of explosives, arms and ammunition from house.

Meanwhile, the same court extended the police remand of Harkat's activist Kamran alias Atif, who was arrested in an injured condition after a police shootout, till June 2.

The court, granting the extension of police remand, ordered that he shall be produced before court on the next date of hearing if medically advised. Police had arrested Kamran on May 19 after a shootout. Ms Sarwar also received bullets during an exchange of fire and died on the spot.

On a statement of the accused, police recovered eight hand-grenades, five rockets, one klashnikovs with two magazines and other explosive devises from House No.1272, Sector 15-A/4 Al-Mubashir Building situated at Iqbal Garden Road. -PPI
