US hints at employing Shia fighters
BAGHDAD, May 11: The US general whose forces are fighting guerillas loyal to Moqtada Sadr said on Tuesday those fighters could form part of a new Iraqi force he wants to see in the holy city of Najaf. It could be a model for much of the country, he added.
Major General Martin Dempsey said he started a recruitment drive to boost local security forces about two weeks ago and had asked local leaders to recommend men for the force in Najaf.
"I'm looking to build it with people who are certified to me by credible Iraqi tribal leaders, political leaders and religious leaders," Dempsey said, adding members of Sadr's militia could join if they were not wanted for crimes. -Reuters
