Shujaat refutes in-house change rumours

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD April 29: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has rejected rumours about an in-house change and said the assemblies will complete their constitutional term. He however added that there was nothing wrong if snap polls were held six months ahead of schedule.

Talking to newsmen here after attending the inaugural ceremony of a memorial dedicated to the national poets of Pakistan and Romania - Allama Iqbal and Nihal Eminescu - on Thursday, the PML-Q leader said President Musharraf had not formally expressed his desire to become the party's president. "Whenever he does that we will look into the matter accordingly," said Mr Hussain.

Commenting on speculations about a move to bring about an in-house change to replace Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali, he said such speculations were being manufactured by the media only. He said that he had been misquoted in Karachi. He had said that snap polls could possibly be held six months ahead of schedule and not within the next six months.

Responding to a question about a letter written by his party's vice-president, Kabir Ali Wasti, letter to President Musharraf and his tirade against Prime Minister Jamali in an interview on a private television channel on Wednesday night, he said he had summoned Mr Wasti to seek explanation about the whole thing and also to ask him to dispel the impression that he (Wasti) was acting at his (Chaudhry's) behest.

He said the letter had been written by Mr Wasti without his consent. He, however, said he would be taking up with the prime minister the issues raised by Mr Wasti in his letter when he returned from abroad.

Asked about the May 2 meeting of leaders of various League factions, he said, it had been summoned to determine the date of a joint convention of all general councils to get the unification decision endorsed. After the unification of the party's factions he said, the issue of National Alliance's merger with the PML-Q would be taken up.
