PESHAWAR, April 24: Most of the science teachers at the University of Peshawar are serving at private colleges and institutes in violation of varsity rules, sources told Dawn.

"More than 50 per cent of the varsity teachers are working at the private institutes," a senior professor, seeking anonymity, claimed.

He said the university's rules strictly bar the teaching staff from working at private institutes, but the authorities concerned were least bothered about the implementation of the rules and the unscrupulous elements continue the illegal practice for pecuniary gains.

Most of the teachers of the departments of computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and English are busy in their jobs with the private institutes.

Some of the teachers, a source said, were teaching students at the private outlets in the evening shifts, whereas the others were bold enough to teach in the morning shift.

"A former vice-chancellor of the university had taken exception to this practice and taken strict notice, but after his retirement the situation got worse," a chemistry professor said.

A member of the university's senate said that sometime back a notification was issued stating that the teachers who would teach at the private institutes would dedicate part of their income to the university.

The notification, the source said, had also fallen on deaf ears and nobody had ever given a single penny to the university.

A teacher who also teaches at a private institute, besides being a regular employee of the University of Peshawar, said that he did a private job, because his salary was too less to meet his expenses.

The teacher claimed that he never let his regular duty suffer by his private job, and said that he attended the private university, when he had no class at his department.

Sources, however, said that the university's rules, say that teachers job was research besides teaching the students and every staff members should be present at their respective departments during vocations when the university is closed.
