DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Police Order will help improve efficiency - IG

By Our Correspondent

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, April 22: Inspector General Police NWFP Riffat Pasha has said that the new Police Order 2002 would help in improving police efficiency and cutting down crime rate.

"Police is not a commercial organization but a law enforcement agency tasked to maintain law and order, and writ of the government," he observed while talking to reporters here on Thursday. He said that despite limited resources, the NWFP police had proved its efficiency and dedication compared to its counterparts in other provinces.

He said that no new vehicle had been supplied to the 206 police stations of the province since 1992. The total strength of police personnel in the province was 33,000. This was insufficient because as compared to it, 29,000 policemen were working in Karachi alone, he pointed out.

The provincial chief of police said the Frontier government had decided to upgrade two police stations of each division. In this regard, Rs7 lakh was allocated for two police stations of Dera Ismail Khan district which would be made model police stations.

Besides, a police colony would also be built with the help of the district government. The IGP said that under the new police order, district Nazims are not empowered to write full Annual Confidential Report (ACR) of District Police Officers as they can write their comments only in connection with law and order aspects.

The remaining professional performance of DPOs will be written by the same superior police officer concerned who had been writing the ACRs before. He said the main agenda of this government "is to end thana culture and restore people's trust in police."
