FAISALABAD, April 4: As many as 1,260 candidates appeared for a written test for recruitment as foot-constables with highway patrols. Over 5,000 youths of the district, including a number of postgraduates and graduates
, had applied for the 624 posts. After scrutiny of the documents, 4,499 were declared eligible for the physical test, which led to selection of 1,260 candidates for the written test.
The written test was held at Police Lines and supervised personally by DIG Rana Abid Saeed and DPO Muhammad Amin. Formal appointments would be made after interviews with the successful candidates. A group of candidates told this reporter that some policemen were asking them to pay Rs50,000 to Rs100,000 each for recruitment.
They further claimed that some elected representatives and senior police officers were trying to get their relatives and friends recruited. They urged the governor and the chief minister to direct local policemen to recruit the constables purely on merit.
Two jobless graduates threatened to commit suicide if they failed to get the petty job. "We have been appearing for tests for constables' recruitment for the last four years but failed to get the job despite passing all tests and examinations," they added.
