Ban on religious processions slated

By Our Correspondent

QUETTA, April 3: Balochistan Jaafaria Alliance Chief Allama Maqsood Ali Domki has rejected the provincial government's ban on religious processions, stating that no-one could restrict religious processions of Eid Miladun Nabi and Aashura.

Speaking at a Press conference at the Press Club here the other day, he criticized the provincial government for replacing Justice Nadir Khan Durrani from the Judicial Commission that had been formed to investigate the firing and grenade attack on the March 2 Aashura procession by some terrorists that left 45 people dead and 160 injured.

Allama Domki said that the government, instead of destroying the network of terrorists, who had been responsible for attacks on the members of the Shia community on June 8, July 4, 2003, and March 2, 2004, was depriving the people of their religious, constitutional and democratic rights to take out processions.

The Chief of the Jaafaria Alliance blasted policies of President Pervez Musharraf who he said had launched an army operation in Wana, South Waziristan, just to please the US government, but who was incapable of providing security to members of the Shia community who were being killed in different parts of the country with impunity. He accused the provincial government of dilly-dallying over payment of compensation to family members of victims of the March 2 massacre.

He also accused the government of having not provided proper treatment to those who had been injured in the attack.

Allama Domki demanded of the government that Justice Nadir Khan Durrani should be reassigned the task of investigating the Aashura mourning procession attack, saying the learned Judge was a man of character and his honesty was beyond any doubt.
