HYDERABAD: Ban on wheat movement criticized

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, April 3: Sindh Abadgar Board president Abdul Majeed Nizamani has taken exception to the imposition of ban on movement of wheat by the Sanghar district Nazim.

Talking to this correspondent by telephone from Larkana, he said that the Nazim had promulgated section 144, CrPC, under which a ban had been imposed on taking wheat out of the district.

He said that it was injustice with farmers who were getting competitive prices for wheat crop due to free movement of wheat.

He said that due to the ban, the price of wheat in the district had come down to Rs340 per 40kg from Rs380 per in one day.

He said that as Sindh produced early crop, its wheat growers were able to get fair price for it and added that the Punjab crop would come in the market in April after which wheat price was expected to be further reduced.

Mr Nizamani wondered why the Nazim of one district throughout the province was acting arbitrarily to ban movement of wheat.

He claimed that the Nazim had violated a decision of the federal cabinet which had made it clear that no ban would be imposed on movement of wheat in the country.

He appealed to the Sindh government to take notice of the matter and direct the Nazim to lift the ban.
