PESHAWAR, March 22: The Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) has expressed concern over activities of irrelevant people in the Peshawar University campus and asked Governor Iftikhar Hussain Shah to take action against them to ensure an atmosphere conducive to studies.

Speaking at a news conference here at the press club on Monday, IJT (PU) chief Abidur Rehman said people, other than students, had occupied rooms in varsity hostels since long.

Accompanied by IJT leaders, Arshadullah, Mohammad Ibrar, Inamullah, Nizamuddin and others, he said that regular students were running from pillar to post to find rooms in hostels, whereas the non-students were occupying the hostels illegally.

"This has been brought into the notice of the administration time and again, but no action has been taken against them. These people are also involved in drug pushing and destroying the atmosphere of the varsity." the IJT leader said.

Besides, the students, the teachers' community, he said was also being maltreated by them every now and then, due to which the teachers had lost interest in the service at the varsity.

Without naming anyone, he said that those people had long completed their studies or were never students of the varsity, but were staying at the hostels. Exhibiting weapons at the campus had become order of the day and more often than not the students were being harassed by firing into the air during night time, he added.

The IJT leader said that the students had been denied accommodation at the hostels and most of them were staying at hotels. Those students often miss classes, because they could not reach in time from the hotels located far away from the campus, he added.

He demanded that the governor should launch a campaign against those staying at the hostels illegally and also take into task the elements who were patronising them.
