DHAKA, March 21: The chairman of the Jamuna group of industries, Nurul Islam Babul, who owns a Dhaka-based Bangla newspaper, was arrested here on Sunday morning for his alleged involvement in the murder of one Alam Pramanik on September 6, 2003.
Alam, a 16-year-old boy, was shot dead inside the premises of a real estate project owned by Mr Islam. A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court rejected a bail petition on behalf of the businessman and sent him to jail until a hearing on March 28.
Mr Islam has been arrested for the second time in less than a year. He was detained in April last year on charge of grabbing a water-body at the Savar area of the district of Dhaka.
He was released on bail the following day. In March 2003, State Minister for Home Affairs, Lutfuzzaman Babar, filed a complaint against the businessman at a police station, alleging that he had received death threats from him.
