LAHORE, March 3: A man was allegedly tortured to death by police at Qila Lakshman Singh on the Ravi Road on Wednesday. A CIA team of the Kotwali police, led by Sub-inspector Mazhar Iqbal, raided the shop of prize bond dealer Irfan Ahmad.
The police claimed that they seized illegal bonds worth Rs11,000 from the dealer and took him into custody.
Muhammad Nasir told reporters that the policemen were dragging his brother (Irfan) in the street when a neighbour, Muhammad Shahid, 46, stopped them. The policemen thrashed Shahid, who suffered grievous injuries. Nasir said the police left the injured on the spot and took his brother with them.
The injured was immediately taken to hospital where he died. The body was removed to the city mortuary. Later, residents of the area protested against the incident and raised slogans against the police. They demanded an inquiry and action against the policemen involved in the incident.
City police chief, DIG Tariq Saleem, suspended from service the SI and five constables - Muhammad Sadiq, Imran Kashif, Attaullah, Khalid Mahmood and Nazir Husain. He also appointed the discipline police SP an inquiry officer and directed him to submit him a report within a week.
The police chief also asked Kotwali CIA police in-charge, DSP Omar Virk, to explain his position as to why his subordinates got themselves involved in such an incident. A murder case was also registered against the suspects on the directions of the police chief and at least two of them were claimed to have been arrested.
BURNT TO DEATH: Three members of a family were burnt to death in a fire at their house at Mohallah Amritsari (Mughalpura) early on Tuesday morning.
Ramzan told police that he was asleep in the courtyard of his house. His wife Sabraan Bibi, 50, daughters - Saba, 21 and Shahnaz, 19 - and a son were in two rooms of the house.
He said he woke up with the screams of his family and saw the two rooms under flames. Police and fire brigade also reached there, but the rooms had been gutted by that time.
The police said the roofs of the two rooms caved in, adding only Sabraan Bibi was recovered injured from under the rubble. The remaining three people were buried alive.
ELECTROCUTED: A five-year-old boy was electrocuted at his house the along the Walton Road in Factory Area on Wednesday. Mubashar told police that his son, Hamza, was playing in the courtyard when he touched a livewire and suffered an electric shock. He died instantly. The body was returned to the family without autopsy.
FOUND DEAD: A woman, unidentified so far, was found dead on the bank of the Ravi in Shafiqabad police station precinct on Wednesday.
