ISLAMABAD, Feb 25: A handcuffed prisoner committed suicide on Wednesday in the lavatory of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) soon after he was sentenced to 10-year jail on charges of adultery, police said.
The deceased, Mohammad Bashir, 65, resident of Gharibabad, Rawalpindi, committed suicide by shooting himself with a pen- pistol in the washroom situated on the premises of the court, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraf, told Dawn.
Mr Ashraf said Mr Bashir's daughter, Sajida Parveen, lodged an FIR with the Airport police station stating that her father had criminally assaulted her. District and Sessions Judge Mian Pervez had released him. However, Ms Parven filed an appeal with the FSC against the judgment of the district and sessions court. The two-member FSC bench found Mr Ashraf guilty and awarded him 10-year term.
Coming out of the court premises, Mr Bashir asked the policemen to let him go to the washroom. After entering the lavatory, he shot himself with the pen-pistol and died. The body of the deceased was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for autopsy.
Meanwhile, a teenage girl committed suicide in her house at G-8 on Wednesday, hospital authorities said. The deceased identified as Rizwana, 18, committed suicide in her house by hanging herself from the ceiling fan, casualty medical officer said.
The relatives of the girl found her unconscious hanging from the fan and took her to the Pims where she died before reaching the hospital, the CMO said. Our Staff Reporter from Pindi adds: A woman was killed and another injured in a road accident on Peshawar Road near Westridge, police said on Wednesday.
According to the police, the car (LRG-1273) in which the two women were travelling crashed into a truck. As a result, Suraiya Khannum died on the spot, while the other woman sustained injuries. The injured was shifted to a hospital where she was said to be in critical condition.
Meanwhile, Hamid Mehmood lodged a complaint with the Airport police, stating that Asif along with three others allegedly entered his house and held the inmates hostage at gunpoint. The culprits took away Rs95,000 in cash, prize bonds, and 80 tolas of gold ornaments.
Similarly, Sultan Mehmood lodged a complaint with the Sadiqabad police, stating that auto-thieves stole his car (RIW- 2794) from outside his house, while Farrukh Sheikh told the Civil Lines police that his car (IDB-8923) was lifted from Jinnah Park.
