ARD holds protest meetings in Punjab towns

GUJRANWALA, Feb 18: The PPP activists continued their anti-government protest for the sixth consecutive day here on Wednesday. They set up a protest camp outside the district court where anti-government banners and placards were displayed.

District Naib Nazim Haji Gohar Zaman, MNA Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, former MNA Abdullah Virk, Mian Azhar Dar, federal council member Aslam Lone and MPAs Zahid Pervaiz, Chaudhry Shabbir, Ashraf Kamboh, Mian Saoodul Hasan Dar, Lala Idris and others attended the camp.

They claimed that the government was following the US instructions. They held the government responsible for price hike, growing unemployment and worsening law and order. They demanded that Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif should be allowed to come back and arrested political leaders be released.

SIALKOT: Speakers at the anti-government protest camp here on Wednesday believed that Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto will return in March or April to safeguard country's nuclear programme.

The PPP and PML-N leaders told workers who were present at the camp that Ms Bhutto's father launched the nuclear programme while Nawaz Sharif dared to declare Pakistan a nuclear power after testing the device.

They said the present rulers were doing everything to appease their US master to prolong their stay. They criticized the government for humiliating nuclear scientists and urged it not to roll back nuclear programme as it served as a deterrent.

Those who attended the camp on the sixth successive day on Wednesday included PML-N MNA Khwaja Asif, MPA Engineer Imran Ashraf, district president Idrees Bajwa, PPP MPA Malik Tahir Akhtar, district president Malik Naseer Akhtar, women wing president Begum Akram Hayat Malik, Yusaf Khilji, Irshad Sahi and Farooq Shafi Mughal of Daska.

SAHIWAL: Political secretary to PPP chairperson and MNA Nahid Khan claimed that the return of party chairperson has been decided.

The date of her return would be given by the central committee after due consideration, said Ms Khan at the anti-government protest camp here on Wednesday.

She claimed that the ARD movement against Gen Pervez Musharraf had entered the final stage and that the return of the former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif was not far.

The proposal to set up a national government given by the PPP chairperson has won the favour of majority of parties, including the MMA, she added. She termed the news of difference between ARD components as a disinformation campaign by the government.

SHEIKHUPURA: District PPP president Altaf Husain Virk deplored the government maltreatment of scientists and said the army-led government was working against the country's interests.

He said roll back of nuclear programme would spell disaster for the country and the region as it would disturb the balance of power. Other speakers demanded release of Asif Zardari, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi and other political prisoners.

TOBA TEK SINGH: The PPP-led anti-government protest camp was organized here for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday.PPP MNA from Kasur Manzoor Ahmad said at the camp that the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was punished for launching the nuclear programme and scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan was victimized by the rulers to please the US and other imperialist countries.

BAHAWALPUR: A large number of PPP and PML-N office-bearers and workers attended the protest camp set up at Fowara Chowk on Wednesday. Speakers criticized the government for making anti-state and anti-people policies and participants raised slogans against President Gen Musharraf and the government.

KASUR: The PPP and the PML-N have set up a protest camp at the shrine of Baba Bulleh Shah here as part of their anti-Musharraf drive.

The camp was attended among others by Punjab PPP secretary-general Chaudhry Naveed Ahmad, PPP MNA Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad, MPA Syed Muzaffar Hassan Kazmi, PML-N district senior vice-president Chaudhry Khalid Hussain, PPP district president Sardar Muhammad Hussain Dogar and tehsil president Haji Aslam Mayo. They also observed a token hunger strike.

Chaudhry Naveed disclosed in his speech that the PPP was planning to launch a countrywide mass-contact campaign and a decision in this regard would be announced soon.
