Yousuf and Saleh sound stern warnings

KARACHI, Feb 8: Mohammad Yousuf and second seed Saleh Mohammad, two of the most celebrated cueists in the land, sounded out stern warnings to the rest of the field , when they whipped their respective opponents by 4-0 margins in the 29th National Snooker Championship on Sunday at the Karachi Club.

The former world and Asian amateur champion taught his opponent a snooker lesson, chalking up breaks of 57, 50 and a splendid clearance of 97 points in the three frames he played, being awarded the opener after his opponent Rehmat Ayub turned up late at the venue for his match.

Saleh Mohammad was in a more destructive mood against his hapless opponent Jan Ali from Balochistan, making a brilliant 99 clearance in the opening frame and following it up with breaks of 76, 70 and 43.

On the rampage too was fourth seed and Pakistan captain Naveen Perwani, who after being awarded the opening frame, breezed past NWFP's Zia Amir 4-0 with breaks of 40 and 39. Also winning their opening matches by the same margin was sixth seed Latif Amir Bux, who beat NWFP's Muddasar and seventh seed Imran Shehzad.

But it was indeed doomsday for eighth seed Shakeel Bhatti, beaten 4-2 by Nauman Awan.
