LAHORE, Jan 13: The Government College University's Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) has in collaboration with the PINSTECH developed a 100 Kilo Electron Volt accelerator.

The 100 Kev accelerator is a multi-dimensional project in Nano Technology. Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission physical sciences member Dr Masood Ahmad said the CASP team of researchers had added a new and an indigenously-built laboratory around a homemade accelerator.

He said the scientists, including Dr Ashfaq Ahmad, Dr Pervaiz Butt, Dr Samar Mubarakmand and he himself, had provided all support that was necessary for initiating research that would result in capacity building and human resources development of the centre. The addition of accelerator in the centre would help improve the quality of training being imparted to students, he said.

He said PAEC in association with the Higher Education Commission had become a member of the Synchrotron Light for Experimental Sciences and Applications in the Middle East. He said it was a 2.5 Gev light source which would have applications in physics, chemistry, material science and biology.

After its completion, he said, Pakistani scientists would be able to conduct experiments at SESAME machine which was being installed in Jordan under the auspices of Unesco. He said scientist Prof Aslam Baig from the Quaid-i-Azam University had been appointed as the first director of this project.

Earlier, PINSTECH electronic division head and maker of the accelerator Dr Shoaib explained the functioning of the accelerator. Vice-chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab and CASP head Dr Ijaz Mujtaba also spoke on the occasion.
