KARACHI: DPSCs' problems discussed

Published January 9, 2004

KARACHI, Jan 8: Sindh Police Inspector General Syed Kamal Shah directed on Thursday all the district police officers of the province to finalize the Annual Police Plan in consultation with respective district Nazim and Public Safety Commission chairmen by Feb 28.

These instructions were issued at a meeting with the delegation of PSC chairmen. The meeting discussed matters related to implementation of the Police Order-2002.

The delegation informed the IG that there was no headway in the disposal of unclaimed property. The IGP directed the regional police officers to ensure that the DPOs took any decision on such property under the law by Feb 15.

The delegation members complained that DPOs showed reluctance in implementing the recommendations in any investigation report given by the PSCs. The IGP advised them to send copies of such recommendations to him as well as to the regional police officers to ensure their implementation. It was decided that a senior police officer would be inducted in the investigation team appointed by the PSC.

It was further complained by the PSC chairmen that they were not invited to the open Kutchehries held by the DPOs.Meanwhile, DIGP Investigation II, Muhammad Akber Arain has said public cooperation is necessary for improvement in the performance of police and incidents of vehicle stealing/snatching can only be curbed by joint efforts of owners of vehicles and police.

He expressed these views while speaking to a ceremony held for handing over recovered vehicles to their owners at the Anti Car Lifting Cell here on Thursday.

He said people's role in promoting community policing needed to be enhanced.

"On the one hand the rate of stealing and snatching of vehicles has come down and, on the other the percentage of recovery of such vehicles has increased," he said adding that 56 per cent vehicles were recovered in 2002, whereas 62 per cent vehicles were recovered in 2003.-PPI
