PESHAWAR, Dec 29: The NWFP government has constituted a commission to look into the pros and cons of the restoration of students’ unions in colleges and universities, an official said.
The step has been taken in the wake of a campaign launched by the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), which also organized a referendum in the state-run educational institutions a fortnight ago, wherein most of the students cast their votes in favour of the unions.
The commission, to be headed by Education Minister Maulana Fazal Ali, will submit its report to Chief Minister Akram Durrani. The commission will hold consultations with the vice-chancellors and heads of the colleges, besides ascertaining the opinion of educationists and retired professors and students’ organizations.
STEP LAUDED: Meanwhile, the IJT has welcomed the formation of the commission for restoration of students unions.
In a press statement issued here on Monday, Shahab Hussain, the provincial head of the IJT, said restoration of students unions would prove a landmark decision of the government.
He said it would enable the student community to strive for the attainment of their rights from a proper forum.
The students unions were banned in the early 90s, due to which students had been facing numerous problems in the resolution of their genuine problems, he said.
The IJT chief urged the government to give a representation to the genuine representatives of the students, so that recommendations could be chalked out impartially.
