PESHAWAR, Dec 29: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Ammal-dominated NWFP Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a PML-Q-sponsored resolution condemning two suicide attacks to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf.
After a heated debate over the question of determining the legitimacy of using the title of “President” for General Pervez Musharraf, as contained under the draft resolution, the provincial assembly, on the request of the leader of the opposition Shahzada Gustasip, unanimously adopted the resolution.
PML-Q parliamentary leader Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani requested the Speaker of the Provincial Assembly, Bakht Jehan Khan, to suspend Rule 124 of the NWFP Assembly Rules of Business to allow him to table the resolution seeking condemnation of the Dec 25 attempt on the life of President Pervez Musharraf.
The resolution condemned the attempt on the life of the President and demanded the arrest of the terrorists involved in the planning of the attack.
The treasury benches in the NWFP assembly led by Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani helped Mr Mushtaq Ghani’s bid to get the resolution adopted unanimously.
However, it were parliamentary leaders of PPP(P) and PML-N who objected to the wording of the resolution, causing unrest among the members of the assembly sitting on their side of the fence.
Abdul Akbar, parliamentary leader of PPP(P), objected to the use of the title “President” under the resolution.
He said that the same could not be used for General Musharraf for he had not been elected by the electoral college, instead, he assumed the charge by holding what he called a mock and unlawful referendum.
He was of the view that if General Musharraf was a lawful president then why was he seeking a vote of confidence from parliament.
He was seconded by another parliamentarian Anwar Kamal Khan. Though both of them condemned the assassination attempt on President Pervez Musharraf, they were opposed to the idea of using the title of “President” for him.
However, the political bickering came to an end and the resolution was adopted after the leader of the opposition, Shahzada Gustasip, requested the adoption of the resolution after some time.
Senior minister in the provincial cabinet Siraj-ul-Haq, speaking on the floor of the House, condemned the suicide bombings and termed them an attempt on the part of world powers to impose imperialism in all Muslim countries, particularly Pakistan.
He said the MMA was against terrorism and believed in resolving all disputed issues through talks.
