Excellent double by Tanveer

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Dec 3: Tanveer Abbasi stole the limelight at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting, when he saddled home a brace of winners at the Karachi Racecourse on Wednesday.

After Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s chestnut colt Bang Man galloped to his second straight success under jockey M. Yousuf, beating Winning Streak and Jango, giving our column a one, two and three, Tanveer Abbasi decided to get into the act.

Before the race began Lex Luger, an entry from Lahore and tracking well in the morning exercises, was installed as the favourite but the bay horse dislodged both the shoes on her front legs as the horses were ready to go into the paddock.

Hurriedly the racecourse blacksmith was sent for and he quickly inserted Lex Luger with two new shoes. With all the chaos and confusion Leg Luger seemed a little disturbed as he was being installed into the starting gate.

When the gates flew open when the race began, Lex Luger was planted in his box and only came out when the runners had moved half a furlong ahead.

In the meantime Prosmatic with Sohail Ahmed astride took a flying start and made every post a winning one chased by Sachin, Little Sunny and Reliable. In the last furlong Win Today came on with a flying burst, followed by Last Love. But Prosmatic stayed the course and won by a neck from Win Today. Last Love was adjudged third as all three runners passed the winning post almost together.

Delighted with this victory, Tanveer had more moments of triumph when he sent out Smokey Prince, winner of the third race to complete the double. Smokey Prince was partnered by riding boy M. Faiz, who had the satisfaction of completing his first victory of the season. Fizza after fighting a neck and neck duel with the winner till heads turned for home was second, with Sajan Black finishing third, ahead of Field Prince. In this race the bay colt Power Of Tiger was the raging favourite and backed for a song by the racing fans. Surprisingly with Lateef in the saddle the colt ran nowhere.

The new Administrator Fakir Syed Aitzazuddin determined not to swallow this misdeed with a pinch of salt, suspended the rider and the entry of Power Of Tiger for six long months.

Grey Boy splendidly ridden by former champion rider Shafi Mohammad and trained by Moheyuddin, obliged the followers by winning the fourth event from Mera Jugnoo and the hot favourite Trust Me, after all three runners were engaged in a neck and neck tussle approaching the winning post. Bull Dancer joining the fray had to be content with the fourth spot.

In another closely fourth out fourth event, Your Opinion piloted by Sher Mohammad, beat Ring Master by a short head, after the two battling it out in the straight passed the winning post together.

Raj Kumar and Sarazen also making their presence felt passed the winning post together and were dead heated for the third position.

After Trust Me let down a host of his followers Yaqoob Choice, another runner from Edward Chou’s stable partnered by Shahid Mannan, made amends for the earlier defeat by sprinting in from behind to pick up the spoils from On Song ridden by M. Khizer and trained by Moheyuddin.

In this race Nasim Ahmed astride Star Of The Day was warned to ride out the bay colt installed as the favourite.

But this warning only fell on deaf ears, Nasim at no time in the race tried to urge on his mount, content to stay in the background among the also ran.

Nasim paid for his disobedience and was fined Rs.10,000.

The next meeting is scheduled to be held on Sunday, Dec. 6.
