NEW YORK, Dec 3: Federal Minister for Housing and Works Syed Safwanullah has said that he plans to introduce legislation in parliament to institute laws with the objective of streamlining the housing and construction industry in Pakistan.

Talking to reporters at the United Nations on Tuesday, where he is part of a UN delegation, he said: “We are working on war footing to introduce legislation so that the buyers have a recourse to a legal process if they have complaints against the construction companies.”

“So far only local authorities like the KDA and LDA oversee such construction, but they do not have any clear-cut laws which govern them,” he noted.

He said that although housing was one of the biggest industry in Pakistan “but it was never given the importance”.

He also announced that the government would consult construction giants the world over in order to protect the consumers and regulate the construction companies.

He stated: “We want to remove the unethical and corrupt practices in the construction industry so that people should be protected.”
