KARACHI, Nov 17: Differences between the city government and the contractors might further delay the reconstruction of Mubarak Dam.
The project has already suffered delays due to non-release of funds by the Sindh government in the past.
The city government is trying its best to convince the contractors to resume work, but the contractors are not willing to resume work on old rates and unless the CDGK pays the outstanding the amount.
The city government had refused to pay the outstanding dues arguing that the Sindh government was not releasing the funds but when it released the funds, the city government has put conditions.
Construction of the Mubarak Dam, which washed away in recent rain, began one-and-a-half years back but later on halted due to denial of funds by the Sindh government, sources said.
The city Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, along with journalists and the city government officials, had visited the fishermen’s village (site of the dam) on July 18 and assured the people that work would restart within 15 days.
Walls of the under-construction dam had collapsed during the recent rains causing a massive mudslide.
The area people have still been waiting to see the development work on the reconstruction of dam, provision of electricity and building of link road as per promises made by the Nazim.
The project was to be completed in nine months and was being funded by the World Bank but due to irresponsive approach by the government officials, the project is still incomplete.—PPI
